What one student at DA is up to...

Fifty of these "Little White Houses" with Emily Dickinson poetry are installed on campus, the brainchild of a current Deerfield junior.  The show moves next to the Emily Dickinson home and grounds in Amherst.  At the conclusion of the shows, all materials will be used in a house build for Habitat For Humanity.

So I'm in South Burlington and Jim Wareck calls me to tell me he is getting on a plane to Burlington Friday night.  He was planning on a writing weekend with writing partner Brad Weir.  I convinced them to rally for a beverage and the rest is history.  More big things cookin' for Wareck and Weir!

New sod arrived this morning and they started on James Smith Field (football) first.  Sod trucks on Albany Road much of the day so far.

Old Dog, New tricks

That's Bob Moorehead, famed architecture teacher at DA.  He had just opened a bubble wrapped package of a newly framed work, "Tsunami", done by him.  It has traditional pen and ink properties but also digital "slices" from photoshop etc.  I thought that was pretty cool...

Every Blade of Grass

I had lunch with the new CFO today. He told me that due to the flooding caused by Irene and the silt which has covered our 13 fields, every blade of grass on every field will have to be replaced. Every blade.

The picture is of the first field which has been dug up and piled. It's the varsity softball field between the varsity football field and the river. No insurance on grass of course.

I heard once that to replace the grass on the main quad after the reunion tent comes down is around $30,000.

If you have ever wondered what the importance of the Annual Fund is and what specifically it "funds", well, now you know.

Hopefully better pictures will come forth of the complete decimation of the lower level, but this is what I could take with my phone.

Main street in Deerfield

East Campus Evolution

These days the "other side of Main Street" is known as East Campus - two new dorms since our day (Louis and Marx) and one less (Chapin), but that's evolving once more.

A combination of factors: an old wooden dorm with no fire sprinkler system, a slightly larger student body, a desitre to house all faculty "on-campus" is leading to some changes across the street.  Claudia Lyons and David Dickinson (she of French and Admission, he of Visual Arts and Faculty Band (aka The Punkadelics)) are moving - to their same house which will be placed on a new foundation at the edge of Chapin Field (pics one and two).  The rest of Chapin Field will house a modular temporary dorm (to be called Chapin I think) until the new dorm is built on the site of the moved home...and the soon to be demolished Ashley House (pic 3).

Ashley House served the school well and was home to some of us in 1979-80 and a few proctors in '82-'83 (Cruikshank and ???).  I'll send demo pics when it happens but if you have any archival images of Ashley scan them and email to me or mail them and I will do it and add to DA Archives. (PO 306...01342)

You may remember that Don moved his family from Chicagoland to Denver fairly recently.  I gave him some familiar names who lived in the area and Don made the time to reach out.  The result?  A great dinner with Jeff Spadafora and Taylor Watts!  Now that's networking '83 style.  Great to see those faces again.

In related Facebook news, Sean Nottage (Bahamas) will call a meeting of the Pocumtuck Valley '83 alumni (Suher, Knight, Nourse, Shelton, Puschak....) when he next visits the in-laws this summer....

Hilarious Guesses and One Right Answer...

Guesses on yesterday's photo quiz were received from Schmidt, Munro,Zales, Sheppard and Nourse.  Answers ranged from: "your daughter" to "Helen Childs Boyden" to "the daughter of a classmate" to "Craig Pattee" - but the right answer (from Munro and a fellow McAlister Dorm resident in 1981-1982): "A Hagerman, Whittaker I think."

The background for his answer is not the McAlister Dorm connection, since Whittaker wasn't born yet, but I did think it a nice hint...John's daughter attends Brooks School and her advisor is Casey Hagerman, the oldest of the four Hagerman daughters.  Kully (daughter #2) coaches lax at Babson, Jamison (DA '99) works at Groton and Whit has just started her new job in the Admission Office at Choate!  A great school family.  (We all have to start our careers somewhere.....)  Thanks for the guesses!

'83 earns $15K as Most Improved! Way to go!

Results of the April Donor Challenge at DA are in and congratulations are in order.  Thank you so much for responding to the outreach of your class agents: Blain, Clark, Feiges, Fitzpatrick, Flagg, Knight, Singewald, Sullivan, Townsend, Weymouth and Wolf, who were led by the enthusiastic Doug Schmidt...

What a rally - with a week to go we had 20 april donors and the class of '74 had 27.  In the last week we added 17 donors and they only added 3!

The team will bask in the glory for a week or two, then its back to the phones to rally the rest of the class to make a gift by June 30 to help DA garner >50% alumni participation for the first time in 6 years...

When you're right, you're right...

As a follow up to a story reported in October 2010, when Eric Peterson wouldn't allow his St. George's School football team to play against a MUCH bigger Lawrence Academy team for safety reasons, it turns out Eric was on to something.

Boston news outlets are reporting a series of sanctions imposed on LA by their league (ISL) for improper financial aid packages to athletes (my summary) and the school has had to vacate their two previous league titles and faces other restrictions for three years.

Eric is not the gloating kind, but kudos to him for doing what's right at the time, and being vindicated later. (Frank DeFord's NPR commentary did support Eric at the time, but many others considered him a quitter).

It's hard to have ideals these days, but we're glad Eric has them and defends them...

Dios mío!

Paul Magee stopped by campus today for five minutes.  No big deal except HE LIVES IN MEXICO and hasn't been to campus in a decade!  He was visiting his 83 year old mom who just had a hip replaced in Bronxville, NY and then his sister who lives in W Hartford, CT.  He was driving to Walpole, NH with his brother in law and figured what the heck, go say hi to JK...Such a thrill.  He recommends all the books by McKay Jenkins '81. When Paul was reminded that the April Donor Challenge was happening he pulled out a $20 and said "That's a buck for each year since graduation!"  So maybe math isnt his forte but he's got spirit!  Great to see you Pablo, please don't wait another ten years.

And less than two hours after Paul's visit, another international classmate called to make his April Donor Challenge gift.  Johannes "Yogi" Mortier - our orthapedic surgeon in Dusseldorf, also informed the class that his 13 year old son happily challenges any of us to a tennis match, as his accolades continue.  Scott Pryce in Spain might be closest geographically- maybe we'll see how that matchup goes before we send any others?

On November 19, 2010, I finally walked down the aisle with the lovely
Hannah Williams. That fact is secondary to the rest of this comment
but it is certainly a place to start.

In attendance at this blessed event were D.A.'s finest James Wareck '83
and Corbin Snow, III '81. As many of you may recall, I am originally from
San Antonio. As such, I have been around Corbin's family for
approximately 40 years.  Corbin's presence was a poignant reminder of
the power of relationships and extended family.  Jim's presence,
however, was a test.  During the college years, Jim and I traveled
together a great deal despite attending different schools. Somehow,
that meant that Jim and I would pile into one of our vehicles and
travel north to invade Hamilton and other institutions.  I confess
that I was not always the best passenger (or driver). In Hamilton, I
distinctly recall stuffing my sports car into a snow bank while Jim
and Al Kerr were trapped in the hatch. Fortunately (for me), I was
enjoying a great conversation with Al's girlfriend at the time.  Some
of you may also remember our 5th reunion where Jim graciously provided
me with the keys to his parent's Suburban.  Some of you were even on
the Suburban as we rocketed across the lower level and stuck it axle
deep behind the tennis courts. Fortunately, we were able to extricate
the vehicle and no one (read me) was harmed in the act. Clearly, Jim
COULD have exacted his revenge at the wedding but he did not.  Instead
Jim regaled a table of like minded people about his movie/screen
writing career. He did not tell any storiees about my strange hatred
of Parney Hagerman or any of the multitude of stupid things that I did
during college and after.  Jim (or the memory of Jim) caused me a
great deal of concern but that anxiety was misplaced. I admit that I
had "people" placed to spirit Jim away if he decided to end my wife's
day of tribute (and no I did not consider it OUR wedding). This time
Jim behaved appropriately (as opposed to Doug Schmidt's Kansas wedding
where Jim's antics were legendary). After the ceremony, my mother
remarked that Jim had certainly matured, which was a direct reference
to Jim's consumption of champagne on graduation day so many years ago.

Jim - thank you for your exemplary behavior and I apologize for
doubting you! Everyone needs to see/buy/rent Below the Beltway.

Guyer Acting Career Heating Up

Oregon’s film and television industry has never looked stronger. Vince Porter, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Film and Television, predicts that the state will pull in more than $90 million from television shows and films shot here in 2011. And that record windfall could be just the beginning.For the third year in a row, Electric Entertainment is shooting its action series Leverage in Portland. According to Porter, the Leverage team wrote checks to 417 Oregon businesses and put 471 local people on the payroll in 2010.

The payoff could be even bigger if the recently filmed television pilot Grimm wins over NBC executives. NBC is expected to decide in April or May whether to back the quirky fairy tale/cop show written for Portland by a team with past involvement in the massively successful Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise. Porter’s predecessor at the state’s film office, Steve Oster, the line producer for Grimm, was instrumental in bringing the production to Oregon. If the pilot becomes a major network show, it could pull $45 million per year into the state.

Leverage is just one of many productions contributing to Oregon's growing film and TV industry.

The direct economic impact of the quirky spoof show Portlandia is smaller than that, but the recent news that the show would continue for another season certainly generates buzz. News is also expected soon on the fate of another pilot recently shot in Portland, TBS’s Brain Trust, which would have a budget similar to that of Leverage.

As soon as the shooting ended for Grimm, it started for the feature film Gone, starring Amanda Seyfried.

But for all the excitement around live shooting, the opportunity may be even bigger in the Portland area for animation. Laika is gearing up for its long-awaited follow-up to the Academy Award-nominated Coraline, and Portland-based Bent Image Lab is growing rapidly, specializing in animation and music videos.

“Oregon is developing a real fertile cluster on the animation side,” says Porter. “I see that side growing quickly, even faster than the live-action side… I would love nothing more than to market us as home for another animation company because our talent pool is growing.”

Schmidt '83 stuns Deerfield; promises calls

New York-

J. Douglas Schmidt, co-class captain for Deerfield's illustrious Class of 1983, announced today that he would mobilize his Class Agent team during the upcoming April Donor Challenge.  "Our strategy last year was to do nothing and our results reflected that effort.  Seven donors last April placed our class 42nd out of the 80 classes still alive.  This year will be different.  This year we are aiming for 57 donors in April.  We have a chance to claim some of the $50,000 in prize money offered up by an anonymous trustee."

The contest, which counts any alumni donation made (online or postmarked) between April 1 and April 30, 2011, and rewards the top six finishers with cash credit to their class total, is the brainchild of Deerfield's Annual Support Steering Committee. Committee Chair and trustee, Zeke Knight '54, G03 could not be reached for comment but has previously said on record, "Why is the Class of 1983 so far down this list?"

Schmidt is excited to have the help of Class Agents Dean Singewald and Pete Townsend, as well as fellow Captain, John Knight. At the same time, he admitted he was most worried about the classmates assigned to Agent Rob Gulick.  "Rob lives in Kosovo and has not been heard from in over a year.  I hope that his assignments (Bourne, Compagno, Davey, Day, Hindman, Kaufmann, Mack, McKelvey and Wester) get the message somehow."

Schmidt also reminds classmates of the generous counting methodology allowed in this contest.  "We have 25 terrific classmates who have already contributed this fiscal year; (Beaubien, Bennett, Blain, Bresnahan, Calman, Flagg, Grace, Greenberg, Guyer, Kikoski, Knight, Mahan, Malik, Patton, Pryce, Roberts, Robinson, Schiff, Steward, Stewart, Suher, Tritschler, Watts, Wolf, Wright).  This contest is for them too as they are allowed to make another donation of any amount ($8.30?) in the month of April to help boost the class participation total!  That's a thoughtful design in my opinion."

"Look for the appeal mailed from Deerfield and prepare for a call from a class volunteer" Schmidt reminded his classmates, "'cause this is our time!"

More New England Champs!

The four faces depicted here won the New England title in the 400 freestyle relay,  
the last event of a grueling championship meet over the weekend, and reset their last  
season's New England record.  The team placed third overall,  merely five points in a high scoring contest behind Andover.   Exeter took the team title.  These faces, however, speak volumes. Three of this same gang also won and set a new NE record in the spring
