NEWS:

BOSTON – The Boston Region Reunion Committee has announced a change of date and venue for its pre-25th Reunion event. Originally planned as an afternoon chance to watch the decimation of the Buffalo Bills by the New England Patriots on Sunday, November 18th (sorry Munro…), the TV gods have moved the game to 8 pm. Host Pete Townsend lamented, “I’m as fond of my classmates as anyone, but inviting them over on a school night for malted beverages seemed like an unwise move, what, with the wife and two kids and all.” The emergency committee meeting resulted in a spectacular idea:

Congrats to Doug Schmidt and Camilla Anderson on the birth of their son, “J.D.” and same to Chip Thorner and Allison Rehnberg (see below). They gladly join the “Late to Fatherhood Club” started 22 months ago by John Knight!

Alex Grossett reports, “As to L.L.Bean, I've been here coming up on five years. The first two years spent in operational areas and the last three in what is now called Corporate Learning as a consultant. While not quite the prediction from the 1983 Pocumtuck "traveling salesman living in Maine" if I remember, it's a great company to work for and it does keep me up here in "God's country"”.
Chip Thorner (1983) and Allison Rehnberg are proud to announce the birth of a baby boy, Lincoln Jon Thorner. He was born on September 22, 2007 in Freeport, ME, and weighed 8 lb., 3 oz. All are well but sleep is minimal! Submitted on Nov 7 2007.Chip Thorner (1983) reports the good news that he was married to Allison Rehnberg in March 2007 and that they are expecting, as well. His company, Boomerang Builders, is doing residential construction in the Freeport, Maine area and he looks forward to bringing his family back to Deerfield for the 25th reunion. Submitted on Sep 25 2007.Peter Townsend (1983) writes, "As a Project Manager for Skanska USA I’ve been helping construct a number of interesting buildings on the Boston waterfront in the past seven years. We’re currently on Commercial Street working on a $185 million dollar hotel and condominium project. My wife, Cindy, and I live with our two boys on the north shore of town and are all looking forward to the 25th reunion this June. See you all there." Submitted on Sep 25 2007.

Boys Water Polo Captures New England Championship
Water Polo - Boys - November 10, 2007
Seeded second going into the New England Tournament, Deerfield faced Hotchkiss in their home pool in a semifinal game. Trailing 2-1 late in the first quarter, we scored five goals over the next two quarters to take a 6-2 lead into the fourth and then preserved the win with sound defense. Three hours later, we faced Choate, a team on a hot streak after upsetting fourth-seeded Suffield in the opening round and top-seeded Exeter in the semifinals. Though we never trailed in the opening quarter, we could not open a working lead against the hot-shooting opponents until late in the first half. A buzzer beating shot by Andrew Wood with an assist from Dom Kwok and then a goal in the first ten seconds of the second half by Oliver Lee, who won the sprint and sped down the left side of the pool and scored, gave Deerfield a 10-5 lead, which we never relinquished. In the game's final minutes, all of the team's seniors, including the six who played on the 2-16 team as sophomores were in the pool playing tenacious defense, the defining characteristic of this year's team. Sophomore Grant Villeneuve and senior Trevor Gladych were named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior Marker Anderson carried home the MVP award, and his fellow captain Bo Swindell cradled the team trophy in his lap for the joyous ride home.
Getting Greener All the Time!
November 9, 2007 Biodegradable plates, utensils, and take-out containers are being used in the Greer Store and Koch Center Café and are expected to dramatically reduce the amount of trash Deerfield Academy produces daily. An increase in the quantity of compost produced and then used on campus is also anticipated. According to Ms. Paige, Director of Food Services, “This is the most recent chapter in Deerfield’s ongoing recycling efforts and an exciting opportunity for us as individuals and as a community.”
All the plastic-looking table ware at the Greer and the Koch Café is made from corn, sugar, potato, or bamboo-based compounds and will break down in Deerfield’s own compost pile in just 45 days. The academy’s compost, created from vegetable waste, grass clippings, and the biodegradable table ware, can then be used as a non-chemical fertilizer for Deerfield’s fields and flower beds.
As we move towards the next Green Cup Challenge and build upon previous recycling efforts, mindful cooperation will keep Deerfield “Green.” So read the signs at the recycle stations and remember: bottles, cans and plastics will go into the same bin and will be sorted by the recycling company. Plates, cups, and utensils can be composted.

REMEMBER: 25th reunion is June 13-15, 2008

ANNUAL SUPPORT: We made a strong push at the end and finished with 63 donors to annual support this year. Not bad – but we really need to rally for our 25th. Please take a minute to think about the kind of stretch commitment you could make in the coming year (some gifts could be increased by making contributions in two different calendar years). It makes a huge difference for Deerfield, with over 30% of the total coming from the 9 reunion classes – not including the 50th reunion… THANKS
