Catch Them When You Can

John Cianciolo and John Knight hosted Jim Wareck for lunch at Matunuck Oyster Bar on the south coast of Rhode Island to wish Jim well as he heads back to Boise State in Idaho to teach in the fall term. Local oysters were enjoyed and hopes and dreams were shared, all with an undertone of hilarity.

Shock and awwwwwwwwwwwwwe!

While congratulations are in order for John Cianciolo on the occasion of his 60th birthday,  it was universally agreed that his daughter Lilly should get all the praise for the SURPRISE 60th she unleashed.

It started with an abbreviated Peleton ride when Bob Keirstead (from Illinois), Will Piersol (from Colorado) and local driver John Knight showed up in his driveway. (CC was overhead later saying, "I'm gonna kill her!")

Phase one surprise visitors included: Knight, Keirstead, CC, Piersol and Doug Schmidt!

More school friends from Deerfield and Boston College descended on a bar in Narraganset for further shenanigans.

Thanks to Nelse Clark (MA), Spence Brown (CT) and Jim Wareck (CT) for joining in the fun!

Kudos to all the classmates that were able to answer the call for John, but especially class spokesman, Bubba Keirstead!

Recent Lunches announce new photo policy

Two great classmate lunches happened recently and all participants "forgot" to include a photo with their information sharing.  This, sadly, includes your editor.  Hence the new policy of yearbook photos as stand ins.  Enjoy!

Will Piersol and Andy Stewart dined in the West...

While Knight and Wareck dined in the East!

Professor Wareck's two feeds...

 The latest from Jim Wareck:

"Checking in from the base of the Boise and Sawtooth Mountains, where I have been fortunate (and humbled) to be named an Adjunct professor at Boise State University in the Theater Film and Creative Writing Department. Yes, I know what you are thinking, believe me no one is more shocked than I about this. During the Summer of 20, LA had been shut down and for a variety of reasons I needed to hit reset. I came to Boise to write, and a college era friend of a friend told me that BSU had just started a film program, so I called and offered to speak to the class. After the talk they offered me a job and now I teach producing for film in the Fall and am getting more involved with the University in the development of the department. Yes, in class, and in the larger University community, not to mention Boise, it is a bit like the old tv show where the NYC doctor goes to Alaska, but I am trying to adapt, and my classroom is in the shadow of the famed blue turf of the football stadium. I am also living half the year in Connecticut and dipping in and out of LA for work on movie stuff.

I'm loving the natural beauty of this new (to me) part of the country, learning about the history, and what is still a pioneer spirit yet able to see familiar faces. As the pictures document, there have been 2 Plunkett reunions, seeing Leigh (Guyer) on his drive through Boise and venturing to Steamboat and spending a great 24 hrs with Adam (Feiges). And as our 40th reunion approaches, and the 100th anniversary of Choate Day is celebrated, I felt the need to celebrate the 39th anniversary of the mostly forgotten Frito Feed from Plunkett East 1, when our corridor master walked down the hall with a bag (singular serving) and offered whoever was there "a frito".  Allegedly he spent what he was given to him by the Academy on, shall we say, personal libations. I haven't made it to Wyoming to see the founding member of DA 83 Mountain West Club, Mr. Pattee, but one summer hope to pass through Jackson if he will have an audience with me. Encourage all to explore this area and come to Boise. still offering 10% grade inflation to any of your children or their friends who use the code DA83 or Choatesucks to register for my class."

Professor Wareck

Jim Wareck embarks on his "next chapter".  Rumor mill wondering if an appointment at Denison is in his future...

"Hey finally a blog post where i am not stuffing my face with food with classmates. I am teaching a 5 week seminar in indie film producing at Boise state University this Fall as well as leading webinars for a film platform. It is a great opportunity as so much of production has ground to a halt and only slowly coming back and Boise is a great place to be. Please note the DA mask under my BSU mask. The program and I both hope this will be a semi-regular partnership so If any classmates have kids who go to Boise or if any of their friends do, please tell them to enroll and be sure to use the Code "DA83" when registering for 10% grade inflation."

Thanks for your patience.

5 Guys walk into a restaurant in Worcester, and Knight moves...

Kudos to Jim Wareck for organizing a multi-state mini reunion!  Centrally located Worcester, MA (the heart of the Commonwealth) served as the meeting point for Eric Suher (W MA), Pete Crow (NH), and Nelse Clark and Will Wolf (Boston) to connect with Jim (New Haven CT) and catch up.  It may take months for the blog to uncover the stories that were shared last night...

Jim says he chose Worcester in honor of John Knight's move back to the east coast from Colorado.  John's wife took a new job in Providence, RI and the family will move to E Greenwich RI in June.  JK says he is grateful for the help of John Cianciolo and Peter Eleftherio in the house hunting and general understanding of all things RI. It's nice to have a network ready, willing and able to help.

At the time of the gathering in Worcester, JK was handing off the reins of the Deerfield Club of the Rockies to Chris Miller '84 and an appropriate dive bar on S Broadway in Denver.

Big day for DA83!

Shuffling off...

From Jim Wareck: As I bring LA 1.0 to a close, in advance of a several month hiatus starting in Idaho, I went exploring and caught my first glimpse of the elusive Al Kerr in his natural habitat."

Then I did the same with Andy Stewart!

Good luck with your transition away from LA, Jim!

UPDATE: 9/9/20:

From Jim's FB post today:
And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack. And you may find yourself living in another part of the world. If you find yourself in Boise this Fall....scenes from the drive. Snake River Canyon, ramp for Evel Knievel's failed attempt. The Golden Spike joining East and West .

Weekdays Make A Difference (DA83 HH#4)

Well worth the shift to a weekday, we were thrilled to be joined by first timers Spence Brown (CT), Tim Ehrhart (NJ), Drew Schiff (Long Island), Craig Pattee (VA) and John Munro (CT). John Cianciolo (RI), John Knight (MA), Eric Suher (MA), Chris Flagg (NY), Ben Patton (NY), Bob Kierstead (IL) and Jim Wareck (CA) rounded out the lineup.  We've got expertise on bottle feeding a steer, how soon a vaccine will appear and where to heli-ski in this class!  Stay tuned for our next event - probably mid July.

Zoom HH #2 - some old, some new!

Another fun Happy Hour on Zoom occurred - and it was great to see some new faces!  Welcome to Charlie Gagne (CA), John Cianciolo (RI), Sean Nottage (Bahamas), Scott Pryce (VA) and Bob Keirstead (IL).  Thanks for returning Doug Cruikshank (NY - points for the DA hat!), Jim Wareck (CA), Whit Sheppard (VA), Eric Suher (MA), Chris Flagg and PB Weymouth (NY) and JK in CO.

We learned that Cianciolo is engaged, Keirstead is retired from the Air Force, Pryce works in commercial real estate and the Bahamas lock down has been tougher, and more effective, than most other countries in the world. We also learned that Jim Wareck is Jewish and that JK has no idea how to "print screen" on his Mac desktop.

Look for another invite from "john.g.knightATdu.edu" (AT=@) for DA83 Zoom HH #3 - to be held SATURDAY, MAY 23 at 6 pm ET.  Share the invite with anyone else in the class you'd like to see on the call - JK might not have their email address and it might have never made it to them.

That was fun. Zoom HH #2 scheduled for May 2

Thanks to those classmates who braved the first Class of 83 Zoom Happy Hour!

Great to See and hear from Brian Steward (TX), John Knight - Don Hindman and Will Piersol (CO), Adam Feiges (IA), Eric Suher and Ben Patton (MA), Dean Singewald (CT), Jim Wareck and Alex Kerr (CA), Whit Sheppard (VA) and Chris Flagg - PB Weymouth and Doug Cruikshank (NY).

We all agreed to do it again and to try and expand the attendee list!

One classmate also recommended a book to the group: "The Classmates: Privilege, Chaos and the End of an Era" by Geoffrey Douglas.  Big picture - it follows five classmates from the class of 1962 at St. Paul's School - John Kerry among them".  Sounds interesting!

Class of 1983 Zoom HH #2 will be May 2 at 6 pm ET.  To get the invite - ask any of the attendees from HH #1 or email "jgknight83 AT gmail.com".  (HINT: use @ for "AT")

The more the merrier!!!

Kudos to Dean Singewald for the DA Dining Hall as his virtual background!  Maybe we should call it "Sit-Down Happy Hour"?

Making the effort

An impressive effort by Jim Wareck (from LA) and Brian Steward (from San Antonio) to chaperone Brian's daughter Grace at her latest visit to the San Diego Zoo!!!  Well done! (Mom Hannah was always nearby, of course...)

LaLa Land

Great to see some of the LA fellas working hard to stay connected! They dined at Dear John's, a Rat Pack era eatery that Frank Sinatra himself would have loved...

LtoR: Stewart, Kerr, Wareck and Weir.

Somewhere in CT

Doesn't matter where - just matters when.  Jim Wareck was recently in New Haven briefly and convinced Eric Suher to meet him "somewhere in CT".  Seems like they had a few chuckles!!

Our 35th reunion is June 8-10.  Would be great to have you there...

Reunion Practice

Kudos to Jim Wareck for starting the buildup to our 35th reunion at DA by heading back to Vanderbilt for their fall reunion events.  There he connected with fellow committed reunion practitioners Rob Rigsby and Hardie Jackson!!!  Great job Jim!  When asked about the photo with Rob, Jim replied, "It was late..."

California dreamin...

Just two guys hanging out in a Pho restaurant in Van Nuys...
"I always enjoy seeing classmates, especially in La La Land (no singing or dancing), but few can afford the opportunity to learn so much about something so unfamiliar as atmospherics as a casual dinner with Mark Beaubien. Granted I was only able to understand one out of every two dozen words, but it was great to hear how terrific and crucial the work he is doing, plus he gets to fly around in badass planes. It was also fun to reminisce about DA and the time he kicked me off the radio-which I probably deserved. Wonderful to hear about his daughters at Deerfield and how they are excelling in the arts. He showed me a picture of his senior Lily singing in front of the Memorial Building and apparently Kentucky Fried Chicken is sponsoring entertainment now with KFC concerts. So that is cool too." - Jim Wareck
