exclusive sunday magazine preview

What happened at Deerfield

I was a teenager at the elite boarding school in the 1980s. He was my teacher, coach, and dorm parent. He was also a sexual predator.

Dropsondes Away!

Incredible science at work as Mark Beaubien tests one of his storm tracking technologies aboard a NASA DC-8

NASA's DC-8 airborne laboratory has flown Earth science missions for more than 25 years. The converted jetliner recently carried several instruments testing new technologies that could aid those missions, Global Positioning System accuracy and aviation safety in years to come.

One such instrument is the High Definition Sounding System comprised of dropsondes using long-range telemetry. The instrument was developed by Yankee Environmental Systems in western Massachusetts and funded by the Navy, NOAA and a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant through NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif. Eight soda-can sized sondes were dispensed during flight, sending back data on pressure, temperature, humidity, winds and sea surface temperature.
Next phase of the dropsonde study will be flown in September on several NASA WB-57 flights when up to 96 sondes per flight will be automatically dispensed at high altitude. This research, which includes flights on NASA's P-3B flying laboratory, is leading up to installation on a NASA Global Hawk for the 2014 Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel mission.

Sory and Ehmann

The best part of having a small turnout was the quality time we all spent together. Full list later in the week.

Its so easy!

John Ehmann is moving to Granby, CT from Scranton, PA in the next few weeks so Eric Suher and John Knight joined him at Northampton Brewery last night to celebrate.  He's rushing the family up here to make reunions, and Suher says he'll be there too.  Of course, neither have registered yet!!!

It's easy to do: www.deerfield.edu/go/reunions or call 413.774.1474 to get some help.  HOUSING IS LIMITED and running low - you should call asap if you want to stay on campus.

In unrelated news, Ben Patton is appearing on "Inside WWII" tonight on NatGeo!

Lots to like in our class - lets get together June 14-16.

For 2013 and Pattee

Had the opportunity to don the Class of 2013 bow tie today and hang out with real seniors!  They put up with the old guy and his stories...

I had to go to YouTube to remember how to tie a bow tie, but I did it in honor of Craig Pattee and his stylish bow ties he wore back in the day.  I have those pictures somewhere...Come see what I find in my scrapbook by coming to reunions!

It's natural

Nelse Clark takes his Privateer Rum to NYC and Doug Schmidt and Hank LeMieux offer to help him offload!  Reunions can happen on the fly, or planned - like June 14-16 (deerfield.edu/go/reunions).

Whit's a writer....

A piece I wrote last fall for RICHMOND magazine about the devastating effects of head trauma on former NFL player Ray Easterling has won first place in the In-Depth/Investigative Reporting category of the 2012 Virginia Press Association awards. Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/c9of9es

Motivated by Cost

You will remember that each year Deerfield students apply for funds from the Charles Piper Cost '83 Award.  Two young women from China won the award last year and made their presentation to the school yesterday.  They are focused on educational opportunities in their hometown and aren't content to stop at just one summer.  Helen (below) led the presentation and had this to say after her presentation: "Thanks again, and please kindly include my most sincere thankfulness for the Cost family and your entire class. May and I will continue work on Face to Face to make it a life-long business, but not just a summer project."

Read the magazine...

This is basically a test entry.  The feedburner digest email to subscribers seems to have taken a sabbatical, so I have changed some settings to see if I can get it going again.

You have missed two previous posts on www.DA1983.blogspot.com.

That said, you will receive a Deerfield Magazine soon, and you should read it.  Good description of new course being taught by Andy Harcourt (and others) that was a HUGE hit with the volunteers in attendance at Leaders Weekend April 26-27. Pilot program for the future of education...really.

Spread the word to sign up for REUNIONS.  Sign up by May 15 to be housed near your class.  After that its a real c***shoot.

Reuniting

Turns out, it's really not that hard for us to get together...Here's Beaubien one Friday afternoon at Bement, and there's Schmidt and Kikoski in NYC a few weeks ago...

Also hearing from many corners of the class about reunions and the efforts to make it back.  Pattee is coming and he hopes to have convinced Andrew Nash to do the same (from Cali!).  Hank Lemieux is in. Adam Weinberg is in. We always were late bloomers, but NOW is the time to make your plan for June 14-16 and REGISTER...

Retirements and Reunions

P.B. Weymouth '83 retired from his six year stint at the helm of the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association this past weekend.  This trustee position gave him a seat at the table for decisions great and small over that time and we are grateful for his leadership.  I wore my frayed Class of 1983 tie in his honor when I was invited to speak at the meeting.  He'll be at our 30th reunion June 14-16..

Mimi and Jay Morsman's retirement dinner also occurred this weekend and it was a warm reception for their 75+ years of service to the school. Family and friends were treated to a delicious meal on DA china with student performers from the winter production of Little Shop of Horrors.

They will also attend reunions June 14-16...

Speaking of REUNIONS (www.deerfield.edu/go/reunions)

look for at least these classmates under the new tent.  We hope all of you considering it will register now!  Heck, Spads is coming from Colorado!
  • Kevin Bresnahan and Maura Bresnahan
  • John Brown
  • Doug Cruikshank
  • Christopher Flagg and Heidi Flagg
  • John Knight
  • John Munro
  • Jeff Spadafora
  • Philip Weymouth
PS - David Hagerman '64 will not be at reunions but he was around this weekend so here's a bonus picture!

Plus, Minus, BIG PLUS

Paul "Pablo" Magee was in New England recently from his home in Mexico and seems to have added some hair. He visited with Nate Nourse, for whom the opposite seems to be true.  Seeing them both was a treat, even though Pablo says he will not be able to return for reunions. He did make time for a gift to the annual fund though!  With the April Donor Challenge on the horizon, you should consider making your gift in April and making it a three year recurring gift to score more points for the class and to help sustain Deerfield's excellence!
