Case in point: Johannes “Yogi” Mortier, won the contest for longest trip to play in the Deerfield Alumni Soccer Game! That’s right, Yogi flew over for the weekend from Dusseldorf, Germany and connected with his former coach, Roland Young who came to watch the game. Rollie walked away with a gift too – a soccer ball from the recent World Cup competition in Germany. Nice work Yogi…Kinda makes you wonder why you haven’t been back to DA recently, doesn’t it?

2006 - September - DA 83 E News

DA Class of 1983 E-Newsletter
Sept-Oct 2006

Dear 83er,

Welcome new “subscribers”! It is great to have Jamie Rogers and Hong Lee in our distribution list now – that makes 135 going strong in ’83! Let’s try to add as many as we can this year as we prepare to RALLY TO THE VALLEY in June 2008!

Thanks to PB Weymouth for the completion of his 6 years on the Executive Committee of the Deerfield Alumni Association! Drew Schiff has one last year on the Board of Trustees to complete his ten year tenure. Thanks guys!

Deerfield Daughters? It has happened. Four members of the Class of 1983 have all brought children to Deerfield recently as part of the admission process. And they are all daughters! John Munro earns the early bird award, followed closely by Jamie Rogers, Bruce Gregory and Hong Lee. Great to have them all back on campus – even while a little nerve-wracking that DA is the toughest boarding school in the country to get into these days…

ClASS NOTES: (Ed. Note. This space will no longer carry the bulk of the 1983 Class notes – unless they are unfit for public consumption – then you’ll see them here. Most notes can be viewed on www.DeerfieldAlumni.org, so you should register for the alumni website to read them and post your own.).

Case in point: Dave Ziccardi, yup, Dave Ziccardi posted a note there after 23 years. If you need any helping logging on to the new site, like your unique ID – please email jknight@deerfield.edu

Other notes on the site are from or about Vincent Fabella, Eric Suher, Don Hindman, Chris Day, Dave Morley and the list goes on and on. Register – log in and post a note and a picture – it’s that easy…

GOING FORWARD it is likely the Class of 1983 page on the www.deerfieldalumni.org site will be the central location of information and announcements – so know how to get there.

2006 - May- DA 83 E News

DA Class of 1983 E-Newsletter
May 2006

Dear 83er,

Ed. Note: This may be our best issue, ever. It includes stories from classmates spanning the globe and careers – while also informing us of the passing this week of a beloved member of the Deerfield Faculty. The single biggest reason this issue is excellent – Doug Schmidt. He called 80% of the class in the last few weeks – and then searched for the other 20%. I guess he is really lonely – after reaching out to all of his class – he got on a plane to China (the most populous place on earth). Thank you Doug for taking the time – it reminds us all that in the next year – our 24th since graduating – a full court press to FIND people and re-engage them with the class could lead to a spectacular time at our 25th reunion (June 6-8, 2008). Put it in the calendar kids…

FIVE MORE REASONS TO BE PROUD of being a member of the Class of 1983:

Kevin Bresnahan is currently Chief of Emergency Medicine at Cape Cod Hospital – for those on the Cape and Islands this summer – that is VERY (sorry, Bryce) useful! We know he is “wicked” busy but hope he’ll chime in to the newsletter when he realizes we found him!

Rob Gulick: “I suppose it *has* been a while since I've been back in that neighborhood. Would be nice to get back for the week of the reunion, but one of my clients is scheduled to open a flour mill the week prior, and I'm predicting a delay -- may keep me here. Will do my best.” (I think Rob thought it was June ’06 – but he was thinking about it!)

After working with UNICEF for a year, I moved to Pristina to help set up the American University in Kosovo, then founded the American Chamber of Commerce here, serving as director until last December. Now, when I'm not selling gum, I write business plans for folks who spent the 90's squirreling away money while Milosevic raised his hell across the Balkans. (If you know anyone who might want to own part of a milling business, by the way, or a ski resort, or an office-and-apartment complex, feel free to give them my number...)

My last contact with DA was when Bill Clinton was over here to help us inaugurate the American University. The head of Clinton's lead team was a Deerfield grad. Strange, I seemed to know it even before I asked. Might as well have had 'DA' stamped on his forehead...

Please pass the above along to the gang. Also, please say 'hi' to Adam. I know he's just up the road from you now. “

The attached picture is of me and a few friends outside a Pristina restaurant. (l-r: Serge Doucette, former Navy officer, keeping the peace; a couple of our boys, also keeping the peace; and Bujar, who makes a decent living selling Wrigley's gum to all of the above.)

LTC Dave “Smitty” Smith 134 EFS/DO Iraq: “Trip is going well. Temperature is starting to creep up there and it’s been fairly wet. We had ¾ inch hail last week. Weather has been wild at times. Picture enclosed is an indicator. Our mission here is rewarding and we are proud to be here. I get home late May. Just in time for the good weather. (Ed. Note: Tail section extols “The Green Mountain Boys”)”

Bill Wester: It is great to hear from you and thanks for sending the newsletter. My wife Carolyn and I and our 3 children, billy-age 12, jimmy-age 10, and madeline--age 6 have lived and worked in Botswana for 5.5 years. Carolyn and I met at med school at Dartmouth and are both physicians (carolyn-ob/gyn/pelvic surgery) and me an internist with specialist training in infectious diseases, and we are now both working for the Botswana-Harvard School of Public Health partnership (public-private partnership between the Botswana Ministry of Health and the Harvard School of Public Health) actively involved with HIV/AIDS patient care and clinical research. Carolyn is mainly focusing on the prevention of mother to child HIV transmission and I am working on adult antiretroviral treatment. We love living and serving here and plan to be here at least for a few more years!! I will attach a recent family photo. We will try our best to be in the US during the reunion time as it would be great to see everyone! Thanks again for sending this and I promise to stay in touch! All the best, bill.
This picture is not our house in the background but a local village in the central botswana (okavanga delta) where we recently went on vacation for a long weekend!

Ed Goodson:” In the last month I quit my job, hung out a shingle, and am back in business for myself. Barbara jumped back into the prep school development business by taking a job at Bishop O’Dowd in Oakland, at which she will start in May. We’re putting our house up for sale today, and will make an offer on a new one tomorrow. And Saturday we leave for our week-long tour of the Northeast. I mention all this because I was starting to feel overwhelmed, but then I remembered: “If I lived through taking care of two infants, I can make it through anything!””

NEW YORK, NEW YORK! On April 11th, ARMSTRONG, CLARK, GOODSON, GOTTSCHO, KNIGHT and SCHMIDT attended the Deerfield Reception in NYC at the Penn Club on 30 West 44th Street. While the 350 other people were a nuisance, they had a great time! If you are in New York, working or visiting, be sure Doug Schmidt has your email so he can invite you to things like:

May 16th NYC Beer and Burger Nite – Open to any Deerfielder, with a predisposition for the 80’s types! PJ Clarkes at 6 PM! Nelse Clark has sent an email to the class of ’83 in NYC and will be coordinating the event – in case Schmidt is somehow “detained” in China! (nelse@attglobal.net).

ON CAMPUS: The sad news of the issue, from a May 2nd email.
Tedman Littwin passed away this morning, surrounded by his family and his books. He will be remembered dearly as a husband, a father, a teacher, and a friend. On the morning of his death, Thoreau was heard to have said, "now comes good sailing" and as Henry David was one of his favorite authors, we have found solace in this quote. We thank you for all you have done to help our family during this difficult time.
Somewhere a good man is whole again, with lines untangled, a steady breeze filling his sail, and a quiet wake left in summer waters.

Much love,The Littwin Family

Replies to this message will be collected and forwarded as appropriate. There will be a gathering on Tuesday, May 9 at 7 PM in the Memorial Building – if you wish I can have something read at that gathering…

FROM THE NEW ALUMNI WEBSITE (www.DeerfieldAlumni.org):

Did u catch the recent Schmidt posting? “J. Douglas Schmidt (1983) writes, "I had a great time at Tim Engelland's art show on the upper east side last tuesday, April 17. While i was there i met up with such notables as our former headmaster, Bob Kaufmann and his wife, Ellen, our former history teacher David Dunbar and of course the man of the hour, Tim Engelland whose current landscapes were some of the best works i've seen. Rumor has it that Whitney Armstrong made it to the exhibit later on in the evening, however, his current tour of duty through southeast asia has made him a stranger on the upper east side of manhattan, and everyone knows about rumors... Tim specifically extended his best to Jim Wareck, Chris Flagg and Brian Steward and David Dunbar welcomed any emails to dunbardavid@hotmail.com.(not sure if this is correct) i think our next gathering in new york city should include Dunbar and maybe a few other surprise guests."

2006 - March- DA 83 E News

DA Class of 1983 E-Newsletter
Laaaaaaate March 2006

Dear 83er,

NEW YORK, NEW YORK! On April 11th, ARMSTRONG, GOODSON, KNIGHT, LYNCH, PIERSOL, SCHLICKMANN, SCHMIDT, and WEYMOUTH
are registered to attend the Deerfield Reception in NYC at the Penn Club on 30 West 44th Street. Rumored that Gottscho will appear…Psyched that Goodson is coming from California with his family! To register go to www.deerfieldalumni.org and then “Calendar & Events”. If you are in the city, you should be there…Starts at 6 pm…

In conjunction, Knight will host the first 25th REUNION Brainstorming session at the M Bar, (next door to the Penn Club at 12 West 44th Street), at 5 PM on that same Tuesday, April 11th! Bring your energy and your ideas!

Charlie Cost ‘83 Award
At School Meeting Feb 21: The highlight of this week was the presentation from last year’s Charles Cost Award recipient. This award is a cash stipend granted “to that student who, upon application, demonstrates a sincere desire to work in a volunteer capacity for a significant portion of the summer in a position which best suggests a commitment to help his/her fellow humans, a quality which will long be remembered as an important ingredient in the personality of Charles Piper Cost ’83.” This recipient gave a touching and informative presentation on his project last summer in South Korea. He explained that his aunt was born with mental disabilities and that he wanted to find a way to enrich her life and the lives of those who lived with her in her residential community. With the generous help of the Cost family, he gave art lessons to all interested members of the residential community. The Deerfield community was shown pictures of these proud artists and the work they produced. Finally, these new art students were honored with an Opening at a real art gallery in Seoul. The looks on their faces and the pride with which this project was described demonstrated how important these shared experiences are to the whole community.

FEEDBACK: Thanks to Nelse Clark, Hardie Jackson, Brian Steward, Doug Schmidt and Ed Goodson for their encouraging comments about the January Newsletter. The pictures appear to be a big hit, so keep them coming!

BACK FROM THE MIDEAST, for now…Dave Smith is back from his flying patrols in Afghanistan, but “I'm home until late March then going back to the Mid East for a couple months. Things are good here. Anna is doing well. Hope you are well and had a great holiday season.” Dave Smith Ed. Note: Dave, you are likely back there by now. Our thoughts, prayers and best wishes to you and your family! Keep us posted!

Jon Bernstein writes: “My wife, Kristi, and I have a son (Jack) who will be 2 in March. (Not sure if I've reported before). Too much fun. I've got to say we didn't have to endure too many sleepless nights. He's a champion snoozer at night. Rarely wakes up. (Jinx, as I was typing, he let out a yell. But all's OK and quiet again.) I'm still slugging it out at American Airlines. Determined to stay at least until we turn a profit for 2 quarters in a row. Then I'll contact Mr. Wareck about how to start a revolution.

Other than Jack and work, I spend lots of time helping my folks rebuild their house. Their town, Bay St. Louis, MS, was pretty much destroyed by Katrina. They're fixing up their house and will sell it. You can't imagine the destruction until you see it. I was down there a couple weeks ago, and there are huge (I mean huge) areas where nothing has been touched. It's as if the hurricane was last week. I also have tons of friends and family in New Orleans (my hometown) that we're doing whatever we can to help. The positive is my folks will probably move here.”

Congrats to Kevin McKelvey on his new job as Sales Director in the Americas for Groove Mobile, a hot digital music company!

Dave Venman chimed in with a note to the editor: “My old neighbor (on Plunkett West I) – boy that was a long time ago. (I used to be cool). Good to hear from you – sounds like things are going well, as always, at DA. I have not run into anyone in quite some time, although I used to see Jim Sullivan at Vermont Law School (even that was a long time ago now), and quite a few folks in and around Burlington, VT. I am now married with two children (Ethan 5 and Sophie 2), and living in Lincoln, VT, otherwise known as heaven on earth (population 500 or so). I have my own law practice with my wife, Sandra Lee, with offices in Vergennes and Middlebury. I specialize in Commercial and residential real estate, business/commercial law, and wills/estates, while my wife focuses on criminal and family law. We have no employees to keep overhead low, and with understanding bosses are able to slip out for afternoons of skiing (4 ski areas within ½ hour from home) and mountain biking. Not so bad for an old man.
Gotta go, but I wanted to touch base and say hello. Greetings to all, and I promise to put June, 2008 on my calendar.

Man on the move: Scott Pryce has a new position also: “I’ve been asked to run ProLogis operations in Iberia. ProLogis is an industrial real estate development and management company. This means I’m moving from Paris to Barcelona: it’s tough having to move from one “horrible” city to another. Linguistic adaptations are once again in order: I’m looking forward to morphing my Latin American Spanish to Spanish Castilian, and my Brazilian Portuguese to the old continent’s version of the language. I’ve got a huge renovation project on a house by the beach, which will be ready to receive guests once the contractors finish the job. But it is hard to say when that will be in the land of “maƱana.”

2006 - January - DA 83 E News

DA Class of 1983 E-Newsletter
January 2006

Dear 83er,

FEEDBACK:
Always great to know Jim Wareck is reading the newsletter: “Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to the latest email, but a few thoughts came to mind. One, it appears you must be very busy and successful in your new development post because the November 05 DA 83 newsletter was definitely a paste and cut job. I mean a word for word recitation of an Adam Weinberg PR press release? And Weinberg, are you going to try and convince us that this World Learning Center is NOT a North Korean front operation? Two, since when is it news that Eric Suher is controlling more means of production and avenues of commerce? Couldn't that be in the newsletter every month? And finally, I want to thank you and the newsletter for clearing up a potentially ground-breaking discovery. Around the time I received it, I was out walking at night and thought I had witnessed an unmistakable UFO. But now with the news that DA has appointed a female head of school, I realize the unidentified flying object shooting past the planet Venus was just PB Weymouth when he heard the news. Still in DC, all DA 83ers should call, I make an excellent tour guide and Craig Pattee has offered to pick up lunch.”

(PB gets much positive pub later in this issue…)

November 30 Beer and Burger Social at PJ Clarke’s was well attended and provided many good laughs. Thanks to Doug Schmidt for getting it organized. Knight drove down from DA and brought Andy Blau ’81 with him to the event. Ian Murray ’82 attended and wondered who all the youngsters from ’83 were. Geoff Siefert ’84 stopped by as well, just in from South Africa via London! Dominating the scene was ’83 with Will Piersol, Whit Armstrong, John Kikoski, Schmidt, Knight, Al Compagno, Chris Lynch, Drew Schiff, PB Weymouth and hopefully I didn’t forget anyone. Pete Pauley was sad to miss it, and Dave Madden from CA lamented he had been in NYC only a day before!

Nate Blain complained from DC that nothing fun ever happens there with the class of ‘83. Sadly, I had to inform Nate that a DA sponsored young alumni event was taking place in DC in December…but he didn’t qualify!!! Maybe Nate can find a way to actually get Wareck and Pattee in the same room for a social occasion…

Johannes “Yogi” Mortier apologized from Germany that he could not attend. (Fifty bucks says he is coming to our 25th reunion in June 2008!!!) “Thanks for the note. Sorry, I cannot make it. I left the university of Frankfurt / Main and went into private practice (orthopedics). Home address is still the same.”

Jamie Robinson’s art has really taken off in Athens, Ohio. Look for his “Athens Block” reproductions at this art gallery site: http://www.lamborns.com/athensblock.html

This just blew in: Don Hindman (dhindman@clarknational.com) is living in Chicago with his wife, Maron, and their four children, ages 9, 7, 5, and 7 mos.! Don's most recent (surprise) baby, Trudy, will inevitably prompt a visit to the Urologist for Don at his earliest opportunity. As a "recovering lawyer", Don is running his family's distribution business, Clark National, Inc. Lastly, Don relates that he sees fellow alum Eddie Opler '89 on a regular basis in Chicago, where they meet to discuss the benefits of coeducation at Deerfield.

Eduardo Blohm is Deerfield’s Admission Representative in Venezuela and reports all is well with him…

83 ON CAMPUS

Recently an alumni swim meet was held to honor the memories of former faculty Larry Boyle (recently deceased) and Bill Tyler (still very much kicking). Team ‘83 was well represented by Dean Singewald, Dave McNeil, Dave Morley and Sean Nottage. John Knight jumped in when the photographer appeared…Nottage and Morley are clearly benefiting from living in the Bahamas and it was fantastic they made the effort to attend the event. Dave McNeils’s father swam in the meet also…Great job!

Tim Ehrhart called from campus on January 6th to see if John Knight was getting any sleep (see below). Tim was in town to help with some family matters. Still working at Chubb (18 years) and living near Clinton NJ with a great wife and a great family of three kids 8,5 and 4!

As for John Knight, he is on a brief break from work at DA to help his wife Martha cope with the Christmas Day arrival of Eleanor Noelle Knight! He says it was still fun opening the gifts 10 days later! JK is taking any advice from Christmas babies on when to celebrate birthdays! Jim Wareck on Nora’s birthdate: “John many congrats to you and Martha. But god it sucks for Eleanor. Now she will only get one set of gifts, unless the Vatican acknowledges that Jesus was actually born in May.”

Making it happen at DA:
PB Weymouth was on hand for the new boathouse dedication, partly to honor his father. Here he is with his dad and his own two rugrats followed by the “press release” about the opening! PB is in his sixth year on the Executive Committee of the alumni association. THANKS PB!
November 15, 2005 Last Saturday on a crisp, blue sky morning, friends of Deerfield crew gathered to recognize donors and to dedicate the newly opened Hammerschlag Family Boathouse. A first-class facility that provides more convenient access to the Connecticut River for rowers, the Hammerschlag Family Boathouse is named in honor of Lynne and Mark Hammerschlag, P'93, P'04 and features three bays of shell storage space, training and strength conditioning rooms, and generous rigging areas.
Evoking a traditional New England barn, the post & beam wooden structure fits in comfortably with its natural surroundings, overlooking a grassy meadow above a quiet stretch of the river. Guests at the dedication ranged in age from 8 to 98 years and traveled from as far as the rowing Mecca of Henley-on-Thames, England -- a testament to the long and proud tradition of Deerfield graduates in the rowing world as well as the prospect of more enthusiastic rowers to come!
NOTHING NORMAL EVER HAPPENS TO:

This is a picture which was taken (against my pleading) after I fell into the Nueces River near Montell, Texas (20 miles from Rocksprings) last Friday (in November). While the air temp was 70 degrees, the water was approximately 45. That did not prevent me from spending the next 2 hours in and around the river. Beautiful country. The comments about throwing a dog into the river were exaggerated. I was simply trying to ease her transition into the water…unsuccessfully. Fortunately, she eased my transition into the water on two occasions. Also note that I had changed clothes immediately before this spill which made it even more pleasurable.

AND THIS ONE IS FOR BEAUBIEN, SILVERMAN AND SUHER and any other WGAJ founders…an email sent the students 1/11/06 by the faculty rep for the radio station:

“Over the years Deerfield Academy's very own Radio Station WGAJ 91.7 FM THE VOICE has been under-recognized by our beloved community. Year after year DJs have come and gone and the greater community has neither embraced nor directly rejected these beautiful souls. Instead they have been given the cold shoulder of apathy. The poor radio station began to slowly fall and decay.
Luckily for the world, 6 brave Radio Warriors have arisen and taken up the challenge of getting everyone to tune into 91.7 FM, the place to be on the Franklin County dial. These 6 have decided that the station's black and white colors are too boring and out dated. After much debate, coffee and a scuffle or two they came up with the greatest idea imaginable. Give the station back to the people.
In order to do so these great wave warriors have decided to challenge you, O mighty Deerfield, to give the station a new image. There will be a T-shirt contest so everyone can proudly wear the WGAJ logo, which will be displayed on both our new banner and stickers. The logo, the sticker the banner and the T-shirt will all be made by you and contested over. All these will be submitted to the ITS box in the switchboard under the name Mr. Terwilliger.
Then the best 3 of each catogory will be picked and you will vote on the new image of WGAJ. Our job is done. Now it's your turn to let THE VOICE be heard.” The Mighty 6

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL and keep those stories coming…
