Why Eric hates living near me

So I'm at the grocery store and there's our entertainment mogul in the checkout lane next to me.  It was all I could do to get the iPhone out and take this picture before he hustled out of the store.

Turns out Eric had three sold out shows Saturday night (not a bad thing) and he tasked himself with the responsibility of outfitting the performer green rooms.

There are few of us that would ever claim he doesn't earn his money.

BTW, it is ok if you take a Deerfield related photo and send to me to publish.  I'm just a quick draw with the camera but you have permission to do the same!

DC and Boston...and the IHL

'83 turning out at Deerfield Receptions!

Top: Welcome to DC to Scott Pryce and family!  A brief stay in Brazil after his days in Spain didn't quite pan out for the family so they are in Washington now.  America's got new talent!

Below: Charlie van Dusen attended the Boston event last night and enjoyed reminiscing about the IHL Champion Maple Leafs and his elegant (i.e. disputed) goal in the final game over Bob Fitz and the Canadiens.

Additional: Not only does the Stanley Can live in my office, I have copies of season stats from 1979-1990. In our senior year the Leafs and the Bruins finished the regular season at 7-3-1, the Canadiens at 4-7 and the Blackhawks at 3-8. In the playoff semi-finals, the Canadiens stunned the Bruins 2-1 and the Leafs handled the Hawks 4-2.  In the final the Leafs won 2-1.  Charlie's goal was his only of the season (unverified).

Top scorers in the IHL that year:
First Line: D. Smith (8), Ehmann and Esty (7),  Jackson, Pauley and Piersol (6)
Second Line: Wolf (8), S Brown (7)
Third line: Rigsby (9)

He's back!

Wills Elliman's response to my recent outreach...

"Thanks for reaching out. Having a heart attack, being in a coma for 10 days, 14 days in ICU and 3 weeks at Bryn Mawr Rehab in not a great way to spend your spring. However all is good now....back at work and back to good health. I HIGHLY recommend that all public spaces have multiple AED units on hand."

Good luck!

So a few of us from the class are at a dinner in NYC but not all at the same table.  One classmate says, "Hey John, I'd like to meet that new Dean of Admission, Pam Safford." So after dinner I introduce my classmate, who reminds us that he has a child applying to DA this year.  Another classmate notices that the new Dean of Admission is only occupied by two classmates and introduces himself, and reminds her that he has a child in the applicant pool this year.  Finally the fourth member of our tribe notices all the attention being paid to the new Dean of Admission by our class and comes over to mention...he has a child in the applicant pool this year as well.

Pam was a good sport to pose for the photo and she brings that balance to her work.  My fingers are crossed for all the great sons and daughters of alumni who will apply this year.  They do tend to fare better in the process, like 3 times better than a non-legacy candidate, but in the final accounting fewer than 50% in that category are offered admission.

This was the dinner where Rob Hale '84 and his wife Karen announced their $25MM gift for financial aid to DA, the single largest gift ever made to the Academy.  It was a terrific event and Deerfield will thrive because of all of our philanthropy combined, not just Rob's.  Please remember the annual fund when an email or letter comes your way or go to www.deerfield.edu/give

Old Friends

Chris Flagg was on campus today and saved time for a sumptuous Academy dining experience (downstairs) and regaled us with tales of the old Dining Committee and its many important contributions to our era.

Mr. Michael Cary (then of Phil/Rel department and now back at the Academy teaching English) then bounded over to greet Chris and pose for this shot. How food brings us together...

Hours later, (after Chris had already departed) there was a Bill Tyler sighting (formerly Admission Office and swim coach)!

Banner Day for DA.

Knight adds title

Describing the feeling as "humbling", John Knight was named Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving at Deerfield Academy today.

"Taking over a world class Alumni Relations program from the likes of Mimi Morsman P89, H13 is a great thrill and a wonderful challenge." Knight said.

He hopes to see many of you at Deerfield events throughout the year!

The beautiful sister

Back in the day, Andrew Stewart's sister Hilary was the cause of much loss of breath as she strolled our campus. I'm happy to report that she still is and back on campus for the summer institute known as Look To The Hills. So great to reconnect after all these years.

What happened at Deerfield

I was a teenager at the elite boarding school in the 1980s. He was my teacher, coach, and dorm parent. He was also a sexual predator.

Dropsondes Away!

Incredible science at work as Mark Beaubien tests one of his storm tracking technologies aboard a NASA DC-8

NASA's DC-8 airborne laboratory has flown Earth science missions for more than 25 years. The converted jetliner recently carried several instruments testing new technologies that could aid those missions, Global Positioning System accuracy and aviation safety in years to come.

One such instrument is the High Definition Sounding System comprised of dropsondes using long-range telemetry. The instrument was developed by Yankee Environmental Systems in western Massachusetts and funded by the Navy, NOAA and a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant through NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif. Eight soda-can sized sondes were dispensed during flight, sending back data on pressure, temperature, humidity, winds and sea surface temperature.
Next phase of the dropsonde study will be flown in September on several NASA WB-57 flights when up to 96 sondes per flight will be automatically dispensed at high altitude. This research, which includes flights on NASA's P-3B flying laboratory, is leading up to installation on a NASA Global Hawk for the 2014 Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel mission.
